Abstract

After clarifying the function of the port of Safi prior to colonial intervention, this study identifies the categories of merchants in Safi and examines the condition of maritime activity and commercial traffic at the Port of Safi before the Protectorate. It also highlights the position of this port among Moroccan ports, the influence of European powers within it, and the commercial houses established there. Furthermore, the study explains the role of brokers in the trade of this port, its contribution to Morocco’s economic activity, and identifies the major international shipping companies operating in Safi at the beginning of the twentieth century. The research concludes by addressing the internal and external relations of the Port of Safi and the Jewish presence in its trade
