The Chemical Complex in Safi: A Historical Study

Abstract

We begin the study by clarifying the historical context of the establishment of the Safi chemical complex and explaining the factors behind the selection of Safi as its location. We then review the circumstances surrounding the creation of the “Maroc Chimie” chemical complex, as well as those related to the establishment of Maroc Phosphore 1 and Maroc Phosphore 2.

The significance of this topic lies in shedding light on a crucial aspect of the economic history of the Safi-Abda region—an area that has long held, and continues to hold, pivotal economic importance. This is achieved through a study of one of the most significant industrial institutions not only in this region but in Morocco as a whole: the Safi Chemical Complex, part of the OCP Group (Office Chérifien des Phosphates).
